The Week That Was with David Meerman Scott.
Well, the week with David Meerman Scott may have started with a tweet, but 140 characters would never ever suffice to to finish the week. This post is about the week that was, and written with much appreciation to all involved.
So Monday, David hit Sydney town and spoke at the Social Media Club Sydney with Forrestor Senior Anlyst Steve Noble at the uber cool Oxford Art Factory on Monday night. I’m not sure of final numbers, but it was very full room (300?) The Sydney crowd was very interesting, and quite diverse in level of understanding of Social Media. For a quick summary of the evening see here. David (jetlag is for wimps) amazed us all with his stamina, though we gather the opportunity to have your own rockstar backroom and stage with screaming fans in front of you may have assisted…

A big thanks to Tip Gloria and Doug Chapman for their invitation and assistance in making it happen.
Tuesday started with an early morning breakfast with a handful of prominent Sydney Marketing Bloggers and tweeple.

It was terrific to finally meet and have some great chats with: @trib, @marketingangels, @matthewho, @kimota, @abroadabroadeh, @iggypintado, @katiechatfield and Jaime from Next Digital. You may note from the picture I am clutching an OJ. This is because I was denied service after 2 coffees. I gather this is not normal in Sydney cafes. You wouldn’t find it happening in Melbourne! (but I digress..)
After breakfast, David caught up with Iggy Pintado, author of Connect Generation. You can read about it here on Iggy’s blog. (BTW Connect Generation is well worth the read, I’ll review in a couple of weeks)
We spent lunch with Principal Sponsor Next Digitals clients in Sydney, where David spoke and fielded questions.
Wednesday, we headed to Melbourne, and by Thursday morning, David was at it again with a group of Next Digital’s clients talking about the automative industry and social media marketing. Thursday afternoon was an interview with Jillian Kingsford-Smith of FutureBuzz , who writes for Business Acumen.
Thursday eve, David met with some of the Melbourne marketing bloggers and twitterati and enjoyed a bevvie or two.

Friday, saw the dawning of a gorgeous day in Melbourne. I love Linda Johannesson’s picture of the approach to the venue. It seems to capture the enormity of the learning to come.

I had chosen Champions, at Federation Square as it is a really unique venue, with interesting (dare I say funky??) interior, lots of open light, and spectacular views. I need to say, they were absolutely brilliant to deal with. Probably, the most professional events staff I have dealt with in a long time. Nothing was too difficult. If you are planning an event in Melbourne, make sure you check them out. Oh, yeah, and how about that lunch box hey??

We had about 85 in attendance, and David mixed lecture style with interactive sessions from 9 - 4.30 pm. A lovely artistic crop by @alex4point0 follows (after me: aaaaahhhh)
One of the highlights was the tweetstream. I had asked Karalee Evans @karalee_ to come along and be a professional tweeter. She and Yvonne Adelle (@ideasculture), kept up a cracking pace at tweeting the highlights of the day with the hashtag #smommc. They were supported by @ptagell, @alex4point0, @auntie_abc as well. Both Karalee and Yvonne, not only reported on what was almost a minute-by-minute learnings, they also sourced and included the links to the youtube videos that David was showing or other web resources. If you have some time, go back through the tweetstream to see what was happening. It is a convention that is really transforming professional development.
We were in total awe of David’s stamina. He maintained an extremely high energy level and focus throughout the day - truly a 5 star speaker. The day finished with an interactive Q & A panel moderated by Gerry McCusker, and including James Duthie, Kate Kendall, and Trevor Young.
After some stimulating discussion (yes, truly, even at the end of a long day), we finished with networking drinks. Fabulous.
OK - so here comes the bit that sounds suspiciously like an Oscars speech, (but hey, just imagine me in taffetta, it works).
There are a number of people / companies I wish to thank for their roles in bringing this amazing week to fruition.
If you are looking for a 5 star speaker, and some-one who is incredibly engaging and easy going to deal with, this is your man. I was some-what selfish in my initial motivation for bringing David out - I wanted to learn from a master, and did I what. This has been one of the best weeks of my life professionally.
2. Next Digital - In particular, James Duthie, Brett Nicholson, Tiffany Rodgers, Matt Ho, Matt Edge, and Yoav Goldberg.
3. Trevor Young of Park Young
4. Marketing Magazine - Kate Kendall, Kylie Flavell, and Stacey Manley

5. A whole stack of wonderful people who have contributed to the program by way of support, promotion, ideas, effort and encouragement: Lauren Gurrieri, Linda Johannesson, Alex Webb, IABC Victoria, Market U, Jillian Kingsford Smith, Anne Sorensen, Amanda Boland Curren, Karalee Evans, Iggy Pintado, Sam Mutimer, Jade Craven, Yvonne Adelle — Thank You
6. Finally, my peeps: Bec, Samara, & Molly, who have provided considerable support, admin assistance and tolerance over the last 4 months. You rock. : )
At that dear readers, was the week that was with David Meerman Scott. May all your learning be as enjoyable as mine.

Jenn,
Thanks for proving that the results that can be realized from a simple tweet may know no bounds. I think the reach and ultimate impact realized from your initial tweet to DMS was far reaching to say the least. In fact, looking back over the events, the people, the connections, the learning over the past week, I think “The Week that was, with DMS” may constitute your very first World Wide Rave. Knowing you, it won’t be your last!
Congrats on a job well done. It was a pleasure to be involved.

Hi Jen,
What a terrific day! Thanks a million for pulling this off - it was worth every cent. Loved DMS, loved the venue, loved the peeps I hooked up with. Now just trying to work out how I can scrape the twitter stream so I can keep it!
Tweet soon! Kylie x

Jen
It was a memorable week for me personally and an honour to have spent some time with David and yourself. Thanks again for the opportunity and I know I missed a great event. You can count me in to support any events you manage in future as you did a fantastic job.
Cheers, Iggy

Wow - Kate, Linda, Kylie, Iggy, Jillian, lotta luv in the twitterverse / blog posts. Thanks so much for the kind words - I am humbled. I think one the best things about the week was it brought together people who are geniuinely collaborative and constructive in all that they do. Well at least the people who I met were. That’s exciting!!

Jennifer - You pulled off an absolutely amazing week. Thank you for all of your hard work, enthusiasm, and humor. This was the best organized week - flawless. It was really first-class in every way.
I had a great time meeting so many plugged in and engaged people in Sydney and in Melbourne. Thanks to you all for making me feel welcome.
Let’s do it again!
Best, David

It was a truly memorable occaision on so many levels and the enduring thought that I have is the amazing community we have out there. I love the idea that public relations is public again… that social media is a lot like a cocktail party… and we were living evidence of it. As a social media marketer in Brisbane, I sometimes feel a bit isolated, but after the last couple of days, my community had opened up to an amazing array of people, all eager and willing to share ideas, listen to my ideas and generally act like a community. Wow! When was the last time we went to a cocktail party and the only thin people were interested in was hearing their own voice??? (Too harsh??)
Kudos to Jen - amazing time, venue and experience and a big shout out there to my new friends and also the Brisbane contingent @auntie_abc and @marketingisus.

Hi Jennifer
Ditto to what everyone above has said: Friday’s masterclass with David Meerman Scott was everything I’d hoped for as an audience member.
I particularly liked David’s closing content on the various tricks and tools he put out there to create the world-wide rave about the book World Wide Rave - it was great to see all the different things he tried, and terrific to have a speaker admit that some of it didn’t click with the audiences while other parts did. It tied back to his point that we have to think like VCs now: invest in several things and be prepared for maybe only one or two to really kick. It’s a new way of thinking for me, and I’ll be using it in the future.
Believe it or not, I’m dreaming at nights now about the world-wide rave I’ll be hoping to start for ACID! (www.acid.net.au)
Congratulations again!

Wow Jennifer, what a week! Your organisation was superb and David was a star. I really love the fact that the Social Media Masterclass is now a case study in itself of social media marketing success!
September 6th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
When I saw that David was to speak at Social Media Club Sydney I knew I had to make the trip down to Sydney. Result: not just not disappointed - inspired. Apart from anything else, it was impressive to see how well David handled the rather raucous Sydney crowd. I am truly envious of those people in Melbourne who got to spend a whole day with David. Next time - and I trust there will be a next time - you will of course bring him to Brisbane or the Gold Coast, won’t you?

Goodness. So many comments!
David - thank you. I must say organising events in a web 2.0 world is much more enjoyable than in a web1.0 world.
Amanda, Jillian & Matt, pleasure, I am enjoying reading what everybodies ‘take-aways’ were as much as receiving the lovely comments! It’s so insightful.
Des - thank you, I do think that Brisbane/GC/NC deserves some special attention. As a Qlder, I may be biased, but I do think Qlders are a bit more adventurous than other states, and think like a VC more often…stay tuned…

Fantastic post Jen and wonderful to read all the feedback. Congratulations once again.
To plagiarize David ..’first class, flawless’ ..Yes let’s do it again .. c’mon David .. next book please!
Love the evolution of ‘online to offline’ relationships .. and meeting new friends including the Brissy contingent @JillianKS @auntie_abc.
Congratulations and thanks also to the twitterstream authors, panelists, Champions, Fed Square and The Big Group. All brilliant.
Thanks! Look forward to staying in touch .. and
Watch out for the Queenslanders!
( tho’ most of us are ex Southerners!)

Well done Jen, somewhat of a coup getting such a high-profile speaker Down Under for this class. Speaking of class, everything was top-notch including venue, pre-event communications, food, and the opportunity to meet other industry-types who share my enthusiasm.
Thanks again for a great day - I’ll continue my social media evangelism back in Sydney with a few more fantastic case-studies from @dmscott in my arsenal for the cynics.

hey great write up!
happy to have been involved. now if we could get that Sydney Masterclass up and running……

Looks like you guys had a wonderful event.
What differences in usage of social media could be determined from the interactions if any?
September 8th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
Anne, Andrew, thanks for your kind words. Anne, you are correct, I think these type of events and tweets up are critical for taking online relationships to offline.
Matt - yes, I wonder what would it take….
David - I think most of the room was at an intermediate level of knowledge, with some just starting out and some quite advanced. Even among the intermediate there were considerable variation of practice, but a lot of that depended on industry and purpose. We all left with inspiration to do different, that’s for sure. Thanks for dropping by.
Jillian Kingsford Smith has also just written on the event: http://futurebuzz.com.au/blog/?p=3#comments
